Happy 100 Days!

Everyday in Room 2 we cross one day off our 100s board and at the end of term 3 we reached 100 days! 100 days is a fun part of our morning routine. We are learning to count to 100 in 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s and are also learning a little bit about place value. We've decided that 100 days is so much fun that we're going to keep going and are now up to day 103!

Last week Room 2 wrote Who am I? stories. Today we found a Who am I? game on the Department of Conservation website.

Conservation Week Beach Clean Up

Last week was Conservation Week, so Room 2 and the other junior classes headed down to the beach to have a bit of a clean up. We did a great job and found heaps of litter to pick up.
We have also been trying really hard to keep our school clean and tidy. We have been learning that paper goes in the green bin, food scraps go in the red bin and all the other rubbish goes in the blue bin.

Rainbow Fish Calendar Art

Room 2 have been very busy creating beautiful Rainbow Fish for the Muritai School calendar fundraiser. Our lovely artwork can be made into greeting cards, diaries and calendars and can be ordered at the office until the 23rd of September.

Welcome to Term 3!

Welcome back to school, I hope you had a fantastic holiday! We've been very busy in Room 2 this week and are back into the swing of learning already.

Today the children brought home their new Maths Basic Facts Carriages. (They're like Reading Rockets, but for Maths) Further information can be found on the inside cover of the booklet.
Basic Facts Carriages will be sent home on Monday and tested on Friday.
Reading Rockets can be tested on any day from Monday to Thursday.

Jumping Frogs

In Room 2 at the moment we are learning all about electricity. Today we made static electricity by rubbing balloons against our hair. We then used the static electricity on our balloons to pick up our little green frogs, they were jumping all over the place!

Autumn

In maths at the moment we are learning all about time. So for writing this week, we thought we would write about the seasons. Before we started our writing this morning we went for a walk outside, we looked at the trees and the leaves on the ground and felt the cold wind.

Fishing with our Buddies

Yesterday our buddies came to our classroom to help us make our magnetic fish and fishing rods. Earlier in the week we had coloured our fish in beautiful colours, our buddies then helped us cut out our fish, attach the paper clips and make a fishing rod. We learned that the magnet at the end of the fishing rod is attracted to the metal in the paper clip and that's how the fishing rod catches the fish. We'd like to say a super, big thanks to our buddies for their help!

Junior Assembly

On Friday our class hosted Junior Assembly in Room 2. We were all very excited about it and practiced all Friday morning. We shared our days of the week caterpillars and some writing with our syndicate. Well done Room 2!

Switch on to Science!

Last week was National Science Week and we started our new Inquiry unit called Switch on to Science! At the moment we are learning all about magnets and have found out some interesting things like...magnets stick to metal, if you put a north and a north end of a magnet together they won't stick, magnets can stick together through paper, the table, the white board and our hands!

Grandparents Day

Last Monday was Grandparents Day, it was such an exciting day! We meet our grandparents in the hall where we sang them some songs we knew they'd love! Then we took them back to our classroom where we showed them around and shared some of our wonderful writing with them. Our grandparents brought some very interesting things from the past with them, it was lovely finding out more about our grandparents.
Thank you so much to all the grandparents and grand friends who shared this special day with us.

Our Buddies

Once a week, Room 12 and their buddy class (Room 2) meet up to have
buddies.

This is a valuable time and a time to spend reading, doing art,
playing a game, having a quiz, using the laptops or just having a chat.

On Friday the 8th of April we had the laptops. Using Comic Life, we
created a page to compare our interests,and look at some of the
interests that we share.

What was so great to see was Room 12 teaching Room 2 a new programme.
Room 2 had never used Comic Life before.

Our afternoon at the beach

On Friday the Junior Syndicate spent the afternoon at the playground and the beach. It was a beautiful day and we all had so much fun playing with our friends from Room 2 and the other junior classes.

Pataka Museum and Aotea Lagoon

As part of our inquiry topic 'Here's our History', we visited Pataka Museum in Porirua. At the museum we found out what life was like 100 years ago. We did lots of interesting activities: We wrote on slate boards, used ink pens, did the washing with a washboard and a mangle and played marbles. We even dressed up like children from 100 years ago, we looked fantastic!

After we visited the museum we ate our lunch at Aotea Lagoon, then had a play in the amazing adventure playground.

Meeting our Room 12 Buddies

Last week we meet our new big buddies from Room 12. They were really nice to us and we love seeing them at play time and lunch time.

Christmas Concert

Yesterday was the Year 1 and 2 Christmas Concert. We all dressed up in Christmas colours and decorations, everyone looked fantastic! We were a little nervous about singing in front of so many people, but we did a wonderful job and had a great time. Artemisia sang the first verse of Away in a Manger all by herself, she was amazing!

Avalon Park

Last Thursday we visited Avalon Park. We had a fantastic day exploring the park and playing on the playground.

The Parachute

Today at school we had loads of fun playing with the parachute on the field. The best part was running underneath it and bouncing the balls on top of it.

Winter Wonderland

Yesterday we visited Winter Wonderland at Capital E. When we arrived we met Elf Natalie who showed us to the special wishing tree where we posted our Christmas wishes. Then we met Santa and Santa's elf Cinnamon. After we had told Santa what we wanted for Christmas (hope he remembers all the orders!) we made cute felt mice to hang on the Christmas tree. Then we played a fun game in the gingerbread house and practiced our climbing on the Wonderland climbing wall. Winter Wonderland was such a magical place, we loved it!

Zebong the Storyteller

Zebong the Storyteller visited us at school today and told us a magical fairytale about a King and Queen in a land far away. Miss Ingram, Blaine and Ben even had a turn at acting! It was a fantastic story and we all really enjoyed it.

The Rainbow Fish

Last week in letterland we were learning all about the letter F. On Thursday we read The Rainbow Fish and made our very own beautiful Rainbow Fish.

Powhiri for Pania and Room 16

Today at school there was a special powhiri to welcome Pania and Room 16 to Muritai School. At 10 o'clock we met Pania, her family and friends from Te Puna Kohanga Reo at the school gate. Then we were welcomed across the playground and into the hall by members of the Kapa Haka group. In the hall there were lots of songs, speeches and even a haka!

Milo Cricket

On Thursday Raj and Charlie from Milo Cricket came to our school. They taught us lots of new cricket skills. We had so much fun and even got a goody bag at the end of the lesson!
